The Surgery Center of Reno and Dr. John Ganser recently performed the first single-incision cholecystectomy in our area. In July 2008, the procedure had only been performed at a handful of academic medical centers in the country. This is a new laparoscopic gallbladder removal procedure offering the traditional benefits of laparoscopy and cosmetic advantages as well. “The procedure is similar to traditional laparoscopic gallbladder removal except that only one tiny incision is made instead of four,” states Dr. Ganser. The laparoscope and the instruments are inserted through a small incision in the navel. Since the procedure is so minimally invasive, the patient recovers with an almost invisible scar in the umbilical area. As with all laparoscopic surgeries, the patients will generally experience less pain and blood loss, very minimal scarring, and a shortened recovery time. As a leader in outpatient surgical care, Dr. Ganser and the Surgery Center of Reno are dedicated to staying on the cutting edge of improving the options available to patients in laparoscopic procedures.
